REAL SANTA CRUZ FENCE STAINING
Santa Cruz's coastal salt air is exceptionally hard on wood fences — salt spray and humidity accelerate weathering and rot, especially in beach-close neighborhoods like Seabright and Pleasure Point where marine air is most concentrated. Fences within a few blocks of the coast can show visible surface degradation within a single season without proper protection, as salt deposits work into the wood grain alongside persistent moisture. Live Oak and Eastside neighborhoods farther from the water deal with less direct salt spray but still experience significant coastal humidity. Westside Santa Cruz and Pasatiempo's inland positioning provides the most shelter from marine conditions but still gets regular fog. A marine-grade penetrating stain formulated for coastal exposure is the correct product for Santa Cruz fencing — surface coatings that don't penetrate the grain are stripped by salt air and moisture cycling within a season or two.
